  • Wasps have long, narrow bodies with a thin waist. Their bodies are smooth and shiny and are clearly segmented. Wasps are darker yellow in color than yellow jackets. They fly with their legs dangling underneath them. 
  • Hornets are larger than wasps with a reddish brown body, though they can also appear black and white. Their abdomen is thicker and more broad. Hornets are generally more aggressive than wasps. 
  • Yellow jackets have a shorter and thicker body than wasps, with a defined waist. They tuck their legs under their short body while they fly. They tend to be more aggressive than wasps.
